Overview

Neve Tzedek

Old and new

Neve Tzedek symbolizes the beginning of modern Tel Aviv - the first neighborhood to be built outside the walls of the ancient Jaffa. Established in 1887 by a group of Jewish families led by the businessman Aharon Shlush, the area quickly became a haven for artists and writers. Among those early settlers were future Nobel prize laureate Shmuel Yosef Agnon, his friend and mentor Haim Bialik, and the artist Nachum Gutman. The area’s Jewish character was cemented with the arrival of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, whose home became a center for learning, and a link between the area’s religious life and its artistic traditions.

Neve Tzedek's rebirth as the city’s most fashionable and popular neighborhood began in the late 1980s with efforts to renovate and preserve the area's century-old structures. During this time new cultural establishments found homes in neglected historical buildings, most notably the Suzanne Dellal Center for Dance and Theatre and the Nachum Gutman Museum, located in the artist's former house.

Following the conservation efforts, the neighborhood has transformed into a popular residential area. Neve Tzedek, a neighborhood of people who love Tel Aviv. Small Tel Aviv - with its unique history and atmosphere and comtemporatry Tel Aviv with its bustling energies, thriving businesses and
renewing culture.

Neve Tzedek’s unique ambience lies in the easy intermingling of the old and the new. As you wander the picturesque streets you will pass a longstanding tailor’s shop next door to a chic boutique; a traditional jeweler’s workshop beside a cutting edge modern jewelry store - all coexisting side by side in harmony. This is the source of the magic of that makes Neve Tzedek a gem among Tel Aviv neighborhoods.
